Care Experienced and Young Carers

Are you/have you been in care?

Do you look after someone who has a long-term physical illness, a physical/learning disability, mental health problems or drug/alcohol problems?

If the answer to either question is “yes” and you’re thinking about higher education, then these resources are for you!

Universities and other higher education providers provide a huge amount of support to their students and will help you find ways to make higher education work with your personal commitments. Your care background or caring responsibilities should never prevent you from realising your ambitions.

Going to university or college can:

  • open up many more career opportunities
  • allow you to gain the skills you need to help get the job you want and earn more money in your adult working life
  • give you the chance to make lasting friendships, adapt more quickly to a changing world and have greater confidence

We know that going on to higher education is a big decision and hope this information will make you feel more confident about making that choice.

Please see below for resources that may help you. These are developing all the time, so please let us know if you have suggestions for materials you’d like to see on the site, using the ‘Contact Us’ form.

You can also see a map of all the local higher education providers here.
