
Event: Helping SENDCOs to support Disabled Learners into Higher Education
Tuesday 13th October, 12:30pm - 3:15pm
Hepp are running a CPD event for SENDCOs at which local Higher Education institutions will be providing information on the support on offer for disabled learners.
Students with a health condition, mental health condition, disability or specific learning difficulty will be attending to take part in a Q&A session. There will be a discussion around Gatsby Benchmark 3, as well as a showcase of the resources and activities available through Hepp and their partners.
Programme:
12:30 – Welcome and Introduction
12:35 – Disability Support
The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and Barnsley College HE will provide information on what institutional support is offered, the importance of disclosure at an early stage in the UCAS process and the funded support on offer.
13:05 – Case Studies
Hepp will showcase some short films of current disability students who are studying at a higher education institution. The films highlight the support each student has received whilst studying.
13:20 – Q & A session with the disabled learners
Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of disabled student ambassadors with different disabilities, impairments and conditions that have affected their studies. The ambassadors will talk about their experience getting into higher education and how they find the support available at university/college.

13:55 – Gatsby 3 – Addressing the needs of each pupil
Sonia Hardwick (Hepp CPD Manager) will explain how opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student.
14:10 – Hepp Website
A run through of the website showing the audience where they can find useful information to help support students with disabilities.
14:25 – The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam’s offer to schools
The disability support team from both Sheffield Universities will provide information on the activities/events they can deliver to disabled students out at schools.
