Event: Free English Classes at the English Language Teaching Centre
Do you know someone who would like to improve their English Language level? The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) is looking for volunteers to join classes so that trainee teachers can practise their teaching.
The Free English classes are not part of a course and you don’t have to work or study at the University of Sheffield to attend. If you wish to join these classes, you will do so as a volunteer not a student. The classes are a great way of learning English in a relaxed environment and volunteers in the past have really enjoyed and benefited from them.
Who can join these free English classes?
To join these English classes you must:
Be over 18 years old.
Have an English level between pre-intermediate/A2 (IELTS 3.0 – 5.0) and upper-intermediate/B2 (IELTS 5.0 – 6.5).
Live in the UK and be able to attend face-to-face classes at the ELTC.
Be able to attend at least 80 per cent of the classes.
Here’s a brief description of the two different levels:
Lower Level Class
A2: Can understand information about familiar situations, for example, very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, jobs etc.
Can talk about regular tasks in a simple and direct way on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms his/her background, current situation and talk about likes and dislikes and needs.
Higher Level Class
B2: Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both specific and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her subject/job.
Can interact with some fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without problems for either party.
Can produce clear, detailed writing on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
